"Old Fort Bay", Exclusive Gated Community adjacent to "Lyford Cay"
THE Old Fort Bay community derives its name from the historic building known throughout th Island of New Providence as Old Fort.
Although there are no definite records, there is widespread lore of a fortification built during the Spanish tenure of New Providence in the late 17th century. The property was used in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a sisal plantation. The spiky sisal plants are still very much in evidence in the underbrush.
In 1917 when the western part of the island of New Providence was largely undeveloped and a few roads existed, American, Mr. James Cox Brady, bought the Old Fort for use as a winter residence. In a wonderful 1925 painting of the surrounding property Old Fort was smaller. Sometime shortly thereafter it is beleived that the house was extended to the south and the second floor was added. The architecture of the addition is very similar to the Spanish and Moorish influenced work which was fashoinable in nearby Palm Beach and Coral Gables at the time. After his death in 1926, Mr. Brady’s widow married famous American explorer Sydam Cutting. Mr. and Mrs. Cutting’s travels took them around the world. Mrs. cutting was the first western woman in Tibet. Many today recall parties at the Old Fort given under the Tibetian tents with the Bahamian musician "Blind Blake" entertaining the guests.
Mr Cutting died in 1964 and the Brady family sold the property some years ater to the New Providence Development Comapny. Though shuttered for 30 years, the house retains all the majic of its past. A sensitive restoration of the Old Fort includes repairing tiles, ornamental hardware and other embellishments brought back from the Cutting’s travels. The Fort will be renewed as a club for the community.
The Old Fort Beach has become a cornerstone of Old Fort Bay. The club offers a relaxed place to enjoy a drink, read a newspaper or book or gather with friends. There will also be a state of the art fitness center for you to enjoy. Within the mature landscaped gardens, under the giant silk cotton tree will be a beautiful path to the beach.
A majestic new gate, similar in style to the Old Fort and influenced by the architecture of Viscaya, will welcome residents to Old Fort Bay. Ninety percent of the lots available at Old Fort Bay are on the deep canal system. In addition there are several Beach lots available, as well as Ridge and Garden lots, which benefit from the mature canopy of trees surrounding the Old Fort Beach Club. This exclusive community remains committed to a high architectural standard with beautiful boulevards, parks and extensive landscaping.
